Elmwood Park Zoo: Citizen Science Series

March 9, 2017

Unleash your family's wild side! Elmwood Park Zoo’s new Citizen Science Series is designed to give your family hands on experience exploring the natural world. Perfect for families with children ages 7 to 12, the zoo is helping to spark an early interest in
science and giving children skills they can take home and practice on their own!

Each month, attendees can become scientists for a day by collecting data related to environmental issues, such as climate trends, the spread of invasive species, and fluctuations in bird populations. Each citizen scientist’s findings will help real scientists save the world… or at least monitor it! At the end of each program, participants will have the chance to take part in a behind-the- scenes animal encounter!

In March and April, join the FrogWatch team for some ribbet-ing fun and learn how to spot frogs and toads in your own backyard. Help the zoo conserve bird habitats and celebrate International Migratory Bird Day in May. Defend native species from the clutches of invasive species in September and observe fall foliage to help scientists study climate change in October. Watch the wild in November and collect data to help PA-based scientist understand our changing ecosystems.

Citizen Science Series is crafted to inspire families to spend more time outside and exploring the world around them. Programming teaches participants basic scientific principles and encourages them to practice their new skills at home.

All programs will include an outdoor component. Weather appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Registration is $5/Members and $15/non-members. Registration includes zoo admission.
