Few things are as relaxing and restorative as a professional massage. Weather you're seeking pain management, stress relief, or just a little "me time"; a massage will often do the trick. While a wonderful way to treat yourself, they are also often a luxury, so you'll want to make sure you make the most of your investment. Here are a few tips to maximize your massage experience:
1). Set Yourself Up For Success to be Fully Present. Schedule your appointment when you actually can enjoy it. Try to avoid squeezing in an hour during the work day or when you have to rush to or from. It will be easier for you to relax and fully immerse yourself in the experience if your mind isn't worried about missing your next meeting. Along those lines, if you know there is a specific therapist you'd like to see, don't be afraid to request him/her when booking your appointment. Finally, massage therapists are professionals and a little leg hair isn't going to phase them; however, if you will be self-conscious about your prickly legs, then make sure to leave yourself time to shave (a luxury in itself with kids, I know) before your appointment.
2). Consider a variety of services and enhancements. Sometimes a good deep tissue massage is just what the doctor ordered, sometimes you're need a Swedish massage, or even hot stone. Before your traetment begins, you and your massage therapist will have a quick consult. This is the perfect time to discuss your goals for treatment and see if an enhancement makes sense (hot stones, oils, scalp, etc). There is a wide variety on the spa menu, be sure to maximize your experience!
3). Speak Up! Your massage therapist is a trained professional, be sure to communicate desired pressure level and any areas of concern. This means prior to the start of the massage, but also during. Your therapist wants you to get the most out of your massage as well, so if she goes over a spot and you feel it can use another pass, just ask. Need more pressure on your lower back, please be gentle on my feet? Believe me, it's not rude, but preferred for you to communicate these needs throughout the process.
4). Breathe Into It. I asked my massage therapist what one thing she wished clients knew when getting a massage & this was it. While relaxing, sometimes your therapist may be working on a particularly stubborn knot, which can get uncomfortable-- breathe through it. If you tense up it's less likely she'll be able to loosen the problem area. A little bit of pain for long term comfort is totally worth it. This is a great time to communicate with your therapist as well!
5). Aftercare. Yes, you read that right, aftercare. Professional massages will release toxins from your body. Be sure to drink plenty of water, wear lose clothing to maximize long lasting comfort. If possible, try to follow up your appointment with a low stress activity. This one I always struggle with because the moment I return home, I'm once again a human jungle-gym, but a girl can dream. Also, if you opt to add oils to your treatment (essential or CBD) you'll want to avoid bathing for as long as possible. If not, getting into a warm bath will only help your muscles recover, and lets be honest, who wouldn't want to follow up a massage with a bubble bath? Skip the wine this time, you just released a ton of toxins from your body, alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine will just pump them right back in.
Most importantly, book your massage, relax, and enjoy!
