Winter is here and under normal circumstances, it can be difficult for parents to find new and inventive ways to keep kids entertained. There are only so many times your kids will want to play "obstacle course" or "see how high you can jump" to expel some of their energy. Add in Covid, and the getting your "sillies" out challenge becomes even tougher. Kids, especially ones on the younger side, need a place to run, jump, and play, but many are also missing some structure and routine. This is why dance has become such an integral part of the week for so many families.
My daughter is four. Like most four-year-olds, she is bursting with energy. Much like the proverbial bunny- she keeps going and going and..... she needs an outlet. Each week, for one hour, she goes to The Dance Effect PAC in Spring City. All week long, we review how many days until she gets to see Miss Amelia with anticipation. She takes ballet and tap and twirls through "Enchanted Forests", "Magical Meadows" and among "Zoo Friends". Which exercises not only her mind but her imagination too. As a mom, independent play is a dream come true and dance provides plenty. Official class may only last an hour, but once home, the informal portion begins. From showing us her moves, teaching her "babies", and putting on performances, "dance class" provides her with many days of entertainment each week.
She loves dance class; it's by far her favorite thing. But her love for it is because of more than just the steps she learns; it's the connection with friends in class, the kindness of her teacher, the comfort she feels in routine, and, to be sure, her 60 minutes of independence from her baby sister. What she doesn't realize is it also helps get out any built up energy she's feeling. She doesn't pick up on the fact that her behavior is regulated better with structure or that she's learning cooperation and being a part of a team. She doesn't know that each week she's practicing foundational skills to help her make friends and thrive in a classroom setting. She doesn't realize she's building self-confidence. All she knows is she's jumping and laughing and having the time of her life. But I realize. I see. I know. I'm thankful The Dance Effect PAC put in the time and effort to overhaul the studio to adhere to covid safety protocols so my girl can get all her wiggles out as I quietly watch her thrive amid a pandemic. It's truly a thing of beauty.
If you're thinking of enrolling your child in a dance class, I highly suggest going for it. I also suggest contacting Miss Angelica at TDE. With a wide variety of programs including ballet, tap, jazz, funky monkeys, and acro dance there is surely something for your child. Plus, TDE has rolling admission, which means you can join right now for winter without missing a beat!
