Local Couple Collect School Supplies For Local Housing Insecure Youth

Fine out how you can contribute too!

July 30, 2021

In 2018 Mackenzie Hine had an unusual birthday request.  Instead of her family and friends getting her any gifts, she asked for them to donated school supplies.  Mackenzie has long graduated, but she had a plan.  She gathered bookbags, pencils, notebooks, markers, crayons. and took them to a local homeless shelter.  There, she knew, they would be put to excellent use by kids prepping for the new school year.  Ever since, her and Christopher McGinley have made it an annual "birthday" tradition.  If you're wondering "why school supplies", I'll let Mackenize answer:

"My boyfriend and I truthfully believe the quote, “Education is the key to success.” With that said, we both did not come from a traditional household growing up. We faced challenges similar to many of the children we meet while distributing the backpacks. However, we want these children to know these challenges do not define them. Fast forward to today, we both received our Bachelor’s degree and he is further his education at Med School. We want children to grow an appreciation for their school/ education. Once they start to fall in love with school, they will realize their potential. We hope to inspire them to set goals and continue to work hard to reach them."

2021 will mark the 3rd year and they are hoping to help more kids than ever before! This year's drive is done in coordination with three local organizations (Pottstown, Phoenixville, and Norristown); Mackenize and Chris are looking to collect all the items they can to help these kids already dealing with housing insecurity feel more confident on the first day- not to mention the stress it will take off their parents shoulders.  If you'd like to help contribute to the drive there are a few options.

1). Arrange a drop off.

If you're out school shopping, pick up a few extra items, or better yet have your kids pick out items for donation.  A great way to teach them about charity and helping others.  Mackenize will be organizing a few pick up dates in Royersford and King of Prussia (public, outdoor area).  If either of those are convenient for you, email: mackenziechine@gmail.com to set details.

2). Buy online and ship.

The wonders of online shopping; contribute from your couch!  Again, email mackenziechine@gmail.com for mailing address and specifics.

3). Monetary contribution.

If a monetary donation is more your style, no problem.  Connect with Mackenzie and she'll be sure to follow up and let you know exactly what they were able to purchase with your donation. Or, if you prefer a tax deductible option, reach out to your local homeless shelter and make a directed donation.

Sound good, but wondering what in the heck you should actually get?!  Here are some ideas:
