Helping Students Follow Their Musical Dreams

Meet one incredible student, Abby, and learn how Mosaic Music Lessons is keeping students connected!

September 10, 2021

Mosaic Music Lessons is committed to giving students more than the traditional music lesson experience. In addition to providing an enriching education, Mosaic offers students year-round performance opportunities, striving to integrate creative ways for students to make music in collaboration with fellow students as well as their teachers. Musical enrichment is not the only priority for Mosaic- all teachers are fully vaccinated to ensure that students can learn and grow in the safest environment possible.

When the pandemic shifted the format of in-person lessons to online lessons, Mosaic’s teachers did what they do best. They got creative.

Soon, teachers were incorporating games into lessons like Monopoly, Battleship...even Minecraft...each with a musical twist! During lessons, a student spins a wheel to determine which musical task they must accomplish (a scale, a prepared piece, sight reading, a theory question...) and after completing this task, they advance their game piece, or make a trade with another student, or attempt to be the first to sink their teacher’s battleships. Their “turn” is over at the end of the lesson, and the next student logs in...always eager to see what has happened in the game and get to work advancing their ranking! At the conclusion of each game, winners are announced, and prizes are awarded. Music Olympics was introduced this past Spring, which included each student earning rings for composition, scales, and sight reading...things got quite competitive.

Check out these fun photos, including the thrill of victory when this little piano player realizes he won Battleship!

When Mosaic’s usual performances at local retirement homes and community events became an impossibility during the pandemic, Friday nights became Mosaic’s Virtual Open Mic Night. Mosaic hosted these online events, where students could listen to one another play. Zoom video screens showed living rooms with several family members huddled around to see the other students as they performed. Grandparents logged in to watch their grandkids perform...and one family even formed a family band that played each week! It was an evening of all-around smiles as students of all ages (adults, too!) made music together. Check them out here!

One local Phoenixville student took things to a whole new level last year.  Abby Walton, a current high school senior and longtime pianist, enrolled with Mosaic Music Lessons in 6th grade and hasn’t looked back.  Since then, she has learned a few percussion instruments and is currently studying ukulele with Miss Lindsay, her Mosaic instructor of six years.

In a time when in-person musical gatherings were impossible, Mosaic took to the internet to engage students in a group song to be uploaded to Youtube. The song "A Million Dreams" fit the bill, and Abby hit the ground running, writing arrangements for each participating student, matching their parts to their own individual musical needs. With the broad range of ages, instruments, and skill levels at the Mosaic studio, this was no small feat! Next, each student recorded their piece.  Abby then separated the audio and video files from each video, cut and edited each, and produced a seamless video compilation.

Hats off to Abby, who helped bring musicians together in a time of need, and to her amazing instructors, who have guided and supported her throughout her musical journey. When asked what her favorite part of Mosaic has been over the last six years, Abby didn't hesitate to explain her appreciation for Mosaic’s involvement in the Phoenixville community and how the opportunities give each student "a chance to showcase their talents".

The beauty of Mosaic Music Lessons lies in the shared passion that both the instructors and students have for making music with each other. When asked about her experience at Mosaic, Abby’s face lit up with joy: "The teachers are amazing and genuinely care about the students.... it's just been really fun, honestly".

Mosaic’s dedication to meeting the needs of their students is truly unmatched: from their variety of lesson formats, to outdoor performances that allow students to showcase their hard work, to finding new and creative ways to engage students virtually.

Mosaic Music Lessons is now enrolling for fall lessons.  Private lessons are available both online and in-person at the Phoenixville studio on Bridge Street or the Grace Note Studio in Chester Springs.
