Hands on Learning at Kiddie Academy Phoenixville!

Chickens arrive, gardening for Earth Day, and more preschool fun.

April 27, 2023

When looking for preschool options, especially full day care, parents have a checklist of must haves: a safe environment, caring staff, quality curriculum.  And then there are the things that are "icing on the cake" healthy meals, hands on experiences, joyful atmosphere, kind classmates.  But raising chickens in the classroom, gardening, and cooking?!  They have to be top tier wish list items. Parents who choose Kiddie Academy of Phoenixville are, in fact, quite fortunate- they get to have their cake and eat it too because all these things are happening this spring in Phoenixville!

First, let's start with the chickens, which arrived this week.  Not only is incubating eggs completely awesome, but these students will have a hands on science project develop right before their eyes- it's like a daily field trip and they don't even have to leave the classroom!  As a kid I always hoped one of my teachers would brign this to our classroom- sadly a dream yet to be fulfilled- but lucky for these kids it's happening as we speak.  Throughout the coming weeks, KA students will keep an eye on their eggs, watch them hatch and then have the opportunity to observe them before returning them to the farmer to grow. If that isn't a living classroom, I don't know what is.

This week students also celebrated Earth Day by planting tulips. Kiddie Academy Phoenixville boasts a wonderful garden students tend throughout the warm months.  They plant seeds, water, and eventually see the fruits of their labor when the veggies are ready for harvesting.  Finally, these vegetables are taken to the on site chef to become healthy snacks for all to enjoy. I don't know about you, but I love the idea of preschoolers spending a portion of their week gardening. It feels good to get in a little hands on learning.  Finally this week, the students caught up with Ms. Sammy for "Tasty Tuesday".  Each week students learn how to make a healthy treat for themselves.  They can then take these recipes home to share with their families.  This week's chefs prepared Pear Oatmeal for friends- who knows what will on the menu next Tuesday!

Of course, the preschoolers practiced their ABCs, 123s, and full curriculum. They sang songs, read books, and learned about our world through social studies and science.  But these lucky kids also experienced a few lessons this week in a very real way.  If hands on, experiential learning is what you'd like for your child's early education- Kiddie Academy should be at the top of your list. Preschool classrooms are open for kids three and up with a variety of schedule options.  Call today to book a tour- spots for Fall 23 preschool are going fast!
